The problem of drug production and drugs trafficking has ceased to become a regional problem and is posing a global threat, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday. He was speaking at the third summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Istanbul, Turkey. In his speech the Russian Prime Minister referred to the UN estimations under which the Afghan opium and heroin had killed almost one million people. The problem is so serious that it requires consideration by the UN Security Council, Putin said. The problem of manufacturing and smuggling Afghan drugs is not a regional problem any more, it is a global threat now, Vladimir Putin said. He stressed that, according to UN evaluations, “the world has lost nearly a million lives due to Afghan opium and heroin”.
“The problem is so serious that it is time to discuss it in the UN Security Council”, Vladimir Putin said. In the opinion of the head of the Russian Government, the world can oppose this threat only consolidating trust and working together, “proceeding from the notion of mutual responsibility and each others’ interests”.
