September 24, 2008Following the decision taken by the alliance to postpone discussion of Russian proposals on the new concept of Euroatlantic security that was due to be conducted on the 24th of September in the framework of NATO-Russia Council (NRC) we would like to state the following. Russia has consistently been in favour of establishing a new security system on the basis of the principle of common and indivisible security for all of its participants. Georgian aggression against South Ossetia yet again confirmed the fragility of the existing system of Euroatlantic security and its inability to address contemporary challenges and threats. In this light Russia’s initiative on discussing this new concept becomes increasingly urgent. We are confident that further escalation of tensions and aggressive rhetoric against Russia on the part of some NATO representatives is an attempt to disrupt peacemaking efforts undertaken by our country in conjunction with the European Union to overcome the consequences of Saakashvili regime’s aggression against young democracies of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. NRC was created as a mechanism of political dialogue on current and urgent security issues in the Euroatlantic region. By sabotaging its work certain states just hide their head in the sand. We regret this demonstration of political caprice and call upon our partners to seriously address this issue. Download DOC-file Комментарии |
